Dalton
Dalton is the moniker under which Australian artist and songwriter Emma Louise paints. Having painted alongside her musical practice for many years, Dalton sees the two forms as deeply connected rather than separate disciplines. “I don’t see painting as a dramatic departure from music. I’ve always painted, just as I’ve always made music. There is painting in my music and music in my painting. I’m choosing to focus more of my energy on visual work now because I feel an increasing need to express the parts of myself that words can’t reach.” Dalton’s paintings carry a quiet yet powerful sense of survival. Their richly worked surfaces are scored, layered, buried and brought back into view, revealing atmospheric fields shaped as much by destruction as by creation. Marks, scars and traces of their making remain visible, giving each work a compelling sense of life and presence.
