Mel is a proud Awabakal woman of the Wonnarua nation with ties to the Githabul Bundjalung people. She has curated her collection of ochre over a lengthy period of time. Collecting on country brings her a sense of calm, clarity and stillness, connecting her to the ancestors, their wisdom and to the beauty of the natural and spiritual worlds. Over many years Mel has painted her daughter with ochre for dance performances, and from this experience has felt a calling to work the stunning colours of ochre into her art practice.
