Stefanie Bassett is a northern rivers based artist living off the grid in the Byron hinterland. Her work draws inspiration from magic, music, history, science and nature. She transforms memory and sentiment into thought provoking visual ingredients that address the implications of abrupt climate change.
Amid layers of scratchy pencil, paint, collage and paper, she assembles colourful components that form together to create strange characters and symbolic creatures. This animism of the Anthropocene allows her subjects to speak. Confronting messages and lamentations that invite the viewer to reflect on the threats facing our natural world. As these beautiful scenes unfold before our eyes, this imaginary realm unveils an honest approach to the shadow side of a changing planet.
