Mel is a proud Awabakal woman of the Wonnarua nation with ties to the Githabul Bundjalung people. Working specifically with ochre, collecting is part of her art practice and is a deeply personal and spiritual part of the process. The preparation of the ochres is a significant and alchemical process, they are slowly blended and formed into pigment for painting. It is a deeply personal and intuitive journey, a time of connection and acknowledgment of all that have come before her. Working with this ancient medium signifies Mel’s connection to the land, her culture, to her ancestors, their knowledge, lore and wisdom. Her work speaks of an ancient wisdom and she hopes it will inspire others to open up to the spirit of the land and to the rich culture and knowledge that is held by the ancestors.
