Aka Josh Bird is a young, contemporary Aboriginal artist living in Northern NSW in the small coastal town of Byron Bay. His Aboriginal heritage originates from the Wiradjuri Nation in south- western NSW. He grew up on the south coast of NSW in the town of Nowra, where he was surrounded by a strong indigenous culture and community.
Jay uses predominantly black and white acrylic paint on canvas, using the back of paintbrushes, and dotting instruments, as a contemporary alternative to the ancient tools his ancestors once used. His work often reflects his strong connection to country, in particular the coastal landscapes in which he has grown up along side.
